The stamp commemorated the tercentenary of the founding t of the colony of Maryland by Cecil Calvert, First Lord Baltimore (shown above). The Ark and the Dove ships are depicted in the vignette. These two ships carried the colonists that landed near Point Lookout Maryland.
This stamp confuses many as being a 2¢ stamp due to its red color.
The source for the design was a drawing Edward Tunis of the Ark and the Dove for the Maryland Tercentenary Commission. The bureau engravers changed the position of the ships. Also shown above s a 19thC painting of the same subject
