The previous four pence stamp had been printed in carmine. Due to the new 3d stamp was also printed in carmine it was felt that the colour of the four pence stamp should be changed. The new reddish colour was largely made of vermilion. This presented a problem as copper plates decomposes vermillion so the new four pence plates had a silver sulphate surface.
